To build momentum you must face your fears.

How many times have you missed a deadline or mulled over an opportunity or goal for so long that it simply passed you by? It is very common to block success or any accomplishments of great importance because you cannot see the entire picture, or pathway towards accomplishment. Too often do we refuse to take action in starting a project or opening a door to an opportunity because we cannot understand all of the puzzle pieces.

Many times, we are afraid to start simply because the outcome is uncertain. During all the time wasted on planning, analyzing, thinking, and researching the opportunity slips away or the deadline is lost.

If you wish to be successful in your endeavors, dreams, or uncertain goals you must learn to adopt the approach of simply “going for it”. Open yourself up to new opportunities and become more willing to do whatever it takes in order to achieve more or pursue your goals even further. Do this without expectation.

Say “yes” to each opportunity and do not leave the scene of the opportunity until you have taken the first step toward its achievement. Don’t worry about what happens next or what this opportunity or relationship may bring. If you find out later you no longer with to pursue the opportunity or engage in the relationship you retain the control to exit or discontinue.

You Need Not Know Everything

Just about every time I speak to someone about a goal they wish to attain and I ask them why they are not getting farther in their quest they respond with answers like “I don’t know how” or “I haven’t done enough research”. Let me ask you this. Do you understand everything about electricity? If not, then why do you turn on the lights in your house? Do you understand each and every component of the car you drive? If not, why do you use it each and every day of your life?

You must abandon your natural instincts to doubt yourself or ask “how will I do it” each time a big opportunity or goal presents itself. Stop worrying so much about the means, you must concern yourself only with the end result. If you only focus on the results and really visualize what life could look like once this goal has been reached, you will find yourself constantly seeing new ways to attain it along the way. Your mind will become more open and will begin to seek out ways to bring to you the objects of your desire.

The true power of just taking a leap of faith into your dreams and desires is that it generates momentum. Even the first steps you take toward any goal have enough broadcasting power to send an unquestionable response to your conscious and subconscious minds that this IS what you want to accomplish. Life will respond by providing you with the people or resources needed along the way at just the right moments when they are needed most.

Overcoming Fears and Doubt

You will NEVER be free from fear. Period. Fear is a natural response of the central nervous system to events, circumstances, and other occurrences to let us know something may be wrong or could go wrong. Although fear may be useful in certain situations, in the context of going after goals and achieving the life you want it becomes a nuisance and is potentially worthless.

Moving forward, you will need to face and confront your fears. The important thing to remember is that you must feel the fear as it presents itself. Acknowledge it, but do not let it overcome your decisions. Some people will do almost anything to avoid the feeling of fear which is completely understandable, however if you want to obtain more than a mediocre life you need to understand that beyond fear and your comfort zone could lie something extremely valuable. You must learn to take risks.

Look at your goals. What have you been ignoring simply because you “fear” that you do not have the means or knowledge necessary to achieve it? As you consider these things you have let pass you by, ask yourself what action steps you can take to generate the momentum needed to keep you going through its fulfillment. If its getting a new job, be sure to write up that new resume. If publishing a book is your goal, focus on getting the first few pages written. If your goal is to become a great guitar player, go buy that new guitar and schedule a few lessons.

Small steps will help you gain the confidence you need to face your fears. Each small victory builds momentum and courage to leap into the much larger goals and decisions with the self confidence you need to obtain the winners’ edge. Martin Luther King took a leap of faith. Alexander Graham Bell took a leap of faith. Thomas Edison took a leap of faith. Benjamin Franklin took a leap of faith. Who else do you know of right now that has faced fears, adversity, and obstacles and has succeeded.

There are enough reference points and proof in existence that says if you take that leap of faith – you will achieve as well. As Robert F Kennedy has stated, “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly”. Remember these words next time you let fear enter your mind regarding the attainment or actions steps toward any goal of great significance.
